Iowa Writers Living-Learning Community

Incoming first-year students with an interest in writing are invited to apply for the Iowa Writers Living-Learning Community. LLCs are small groups of students who share common academic goals or interests. Students in these communities live together in a residence hall, attend at least one class per semester together, and participate as a group in various activities, such as interactions with faculty, service projects, field trips, and social events. In partnership with UI Housing & Dining, the Magid Center provides academic support and programming assistance for the Iowa Writers Living Learning Community.

"I can't imagine my first year without the Iowa Writers LLC," writes a former student. "I had every opportunity and resource I needed to launch a brand-new literary magazine with my friends, and we've all grown together because of it. Where before I was terrified to have someone read and judge my work, now I just go next door and get valuable feedback that helps me become a better writer; I can actually feel myself becoming a better writer. I've made great friends through the Iowa Writers LLC. I even have an internship at a press based on my work with the Iowa Writers LLC. The magazine has been a huge success, and we even had a reading at one of the greatest independent bookstores in the country. I've had radio and newspaper interviews and people stopping me in the street to comment on my work. Awesome, unexpected things do happen, and I owe my current success to the writing community here at the University of Iowa. I wish I could live here next year but they won't let me."

The Iowa Writers LLC provides the opportunity for first-year students interested in all types and applications of writing—whether literary writing, science writing, translation, business writing, or the teaching of writing—to become acquainted with one another and to explore the writing resources that are available at Iowa. As a member of the Iowa Writers Living-Learning Community, you'll enroll in a course called Writing Commons: A Community of Writers; participate in a variety of activities focused on writing, from attending readings to talking with authors; and learn about how best to prepare for a successful career in writing.
